The heavily anticipated bout at UFC 101: Declaration this Saturday between reigning lightweight champion BJ Penn and top contender Kenny Florian continues to heat up. The war of words between Penn and Florian continued last week during a UFC 101 media conference call. Penn had recently called Florian a liar for denying sending him a text message prior to Penn’s bout with Georges St. Pierre, in which Florian allegedly referred to St-Pierre as a “roider and a greaser”. Florian noted during the call that the text message was actually referring to Roger Huerta, and not GSP.
“Yeah, that makes a lot of sense,” Penn stated. “You are calling my trainer to tell me to watch out for Roger Huerta? You’re a liar, dude.”
He also talked about his beef with MMA Weekly and Sherdog, saying both media outlets misrepresented him during the “grease-gate” scandal.
“They didn’t report all the info or the facts, just that I was complaining,” Penn stated.
Penn turned his focus to his bout with Florian this Saturday, and said that he is focused on leaving as champion. He noted that losing his last fight to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 94 was definite motivation for him to win this fight. He also complimented his opponent, noting that he was a complete martial artist, and had improved a lot since he fought with Sean Sherk at UFC 64, opinions he had also recently stated in Fighters Only Magazine.
“No matter what I think about Kenny personally, I like his style, I really do,” Penn explained. “I think he judges distance very well, he’s got nice kicks, good jiu jitsu, if he wants to take someone down he can. I think he is a student of the game, a true mixed martial artist.”
UFC 101: Declaration takes place this Saturday, August 8th in Philadpelphia, PA. The event will also feature a light-heavyweight clash between Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin.
