Former IFL champ Jay Hieron (17-4) may fill in for Joe Riggs to face Nick Diaz at Strikeforce: Carano vs Cyborg on August 15th in San Jose, CA. The bout between Diaz and Riggs was to crown the organization’s first ever welterweight champion, however Riggs pulled out of the fight last week due to a “bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug.”
GracieFighter.com is reporting that Hieron has become the front runner to fill the spot after attempts to sign Takanori Gomi went unfulfilled. Phil Baroni was also nixed by Showtime as a possible opponent for Diaz.
Hieron was originally scheduled to face Paul Daley this Saturday at Affliction: Trilogy before the event was canceled last week.
“I’m tired of getting excited for fights and then it doesn’t happen,” Hieron told CagePotato.com. “I just trained eight weeks for a fight and then nothing. I won’t believe it until I sign something, and even then you never know.”
Hieron went on to note that nothing has been signed as of yet, but that he “likes what they’ve offered”. He said that he expects something to be finalized this afternoon.
