In eighteen months, we have come full circle. We had reported in January of 2008 that the UFC would no longer allow Affliction to sponsor it’s fighters, and that Affliction would be starting it’s own promotion. Today, after announcing the cancellation of their August 1st event, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Affliction will fold their MMA promotion and go back to being a UFC sponsor with their clothing division.
According to the report, Affliction was close to brokering a deal with Strikeforce for some kind of merger, but that deal fell apart in the last 24-48 hours. Talks with Affliction and the UFC began shortly after. They had spoken earlier this month about a similar deal, but were unable to reach an agreement.
Affliction and the UFC are expected to be announcing the move in a joint press release later today. It is still unknown what will happen with the fighter contracts that currently belong to Affliction.
