Diego Sanchez (23-2) is getting ready to receive his first title shot since arriving in the UFC four years ago. Sanchez recently noted that Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White told him that he would face the winner of the BJ Penn – Kenny Florian Lightweight Championship fight at UFC 101.
“Guaranteed,” Sanchez said of his title shot to Ron Kruck on Inside MMA last Friday. “It’s guaranteed. After August 2nd, it’s on, I get the winner.”
Sanchez is coming off of victories over Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida since moving to the lightweight division earlier this year. His last victory over Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale last month is already a heavy favorite to take ‘Fight Of The Year’ honors.
BJ Penn will defend his UFC lightweight championship against Kenny Florian at UFC 101: Declaration on August 8th in Philadelphia, PA. It is only his second title defense since winning the title from Joe Stevenson at UFC 80: Rapid Fire in January of 2008.
Kenny Florian is currently riding a six fight win streak, with his last loss coming via unanimous decision to Sean Sherk at UFC 64: Unstoppable on October 14, 2006. His only other loss in the UFC was to Diego Sanchez at the The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale on April 9, 2004.
