A report on Vindy.com is stating that the WEC will be stripping lightweight champion Jamie Varner of his title, and the fight between Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson at WEC 43 will determine the new champion.
Varner had suffered a broken foot during his bout with Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 on January 25, 2009. The fight was ended prematurely after Cerrone accidentally kneed a downed Varner in the face in the fifth and final round. Varner was given time to recover, however it was deemed that he was unable to continue and the fight went to the scorecards, with Varner taking away a split decision victory.
Reed Harris, WEC founder and general manager, noted that the broken foot Varner suffered during the fight was serious enough to end Varner’s career.
“During that fight, Varner broke a hand and a foot, and may never fight again,” Harris stated.
“We’ve decided to match up our two top contenders and have them fight for the interim 155-pound belt,” Harris noted on WEC’s website. “If you haven’t had a chance to see Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson fight, make sure you make it a point to check this one out in September. It’s going to be an awesome showdown. These guys absolutely deserve a crack at the title and I expect this one to go down to the wire.”
WEC 43 takes place on September 2 in Youngstown, Ohio. It is the organization’s first venture into Ohio.
