Scott Coker And Gina Carano Speak On Finally Having Five-Minute Rounds For The Ladies

With last week’s late announcement that Washington state and California have approved five-minute rounds for all professional female MMA bouts, Strikeforce wasted no time in implementing it as they will have the ladies on their June 19th event, as well as the highly anticipated Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos fight on August 15th, fight five-minute rounds.

“We are proud to be leading this movement in Mixed Martial Arts,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. “This will allow the women competing at the elite professional level ample time to set up and fully execute a particular fight strategy. This is another great day for all of us in MMA.”

Up until this ruling, a typical woman’s MMA bout would consist of three three-minute rounds. With this tweak, it not only puts them on the same playing field as their male counterparts, but it will also set the standard for female mixed martial arts for years to come.

“It is great that the largest stage females have in MMA is setting a solid foundation in implementing five-minute rounds,” said female superstar Carano. “I feel Strikeforce is taking female fighters seriously, which means we will be seeing some amazing fights in the future and I am honored to be a part of it.”

Carano and Cyborg will battle it out inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California to become Strikeforce’s first ever women’s champion. They will be the first females to participate in a five five-minute round scrap.

However, the bout between Shayna Baszler and Sarah Kaufman will be the first female tussle to experience the time change as they will be slugging it out this Friday at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington.

“This is a great opportunity for Shayna (Baszler) and me to have this happen before our fight,” said Kaufman . “I am always ready to go five-minute rounds and I know Shayna will also be ready. More importantly, this is long-awaited recognition that we are competing at the highest level of the sport.”
