With Vitor Belfort reportedly passing on an opportunity to face former DREAM middleweight title-holder Gegard Mousasi in a catch-weight bout at “Affliction: Trilogy,” will instead fight Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Renato “Babalu” Sobral.
M-1Global.com was the first to report on Mousasi’s August 1st scrap. Although no official announcement has yet to come from Affliction Entertainment, one is expected shortly as they will begin their US promotional tour on Wednesday in New York City and in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Since defeating Ronaldo “Jacare” de Souza for the title last September, Mousasi has been all over the map fighting a kickboxing bout, as well as defeating heavyweight Mark Hunt in the 1stRound Dream’s highly-publicized Super-Hulk Tourney at Dream.9.
However, when Mousasi offered to face Belfort at a catch-weight, the former UFC champion declined stating that fighting Mousasi at any weight class outside of middleweight would be a lose-lose situation.
In his Strikeforce debut last November, Babalu jacked the title from then-champion Bobby Southworth via TKO. The UFC veteran seems to have revitalized his career since leaving the organization. He is perfect through his last five bouts, four of which were outside of the Octagon.
Similar to their previous two promotions, Affliction host their third mixed martial arts promotion at the Honda Center in Anahiem, California. In addition, they will televise all of the preliminary bouts for $Free.99 on HDNet, however fans will have to pay for the good stuff beginning at 9PM EDT/6PMPDT.
