“Suga” Rashad Evans talked to AskMen.com about his fight tonight with Lyoto Machida, his training style, future opponents and much more. Here are some excerpts:
What do you think of Lyoto Machida’s elusive fighting style?
He’s got an interesting fighting style, but like any fighting style there’s definitely holes in his game and I’m sure I will be able to exploit them.
A lot of people are placing you as an underdog in this fight, what are your thoughts on that?
I don’t really think about that too much, I mean it’s not something that I’m unfamiliar with either. It’s just not really something that affects my training or anything. I don’t even listen to what people say because they are always counting me out especially in this sport.
It seems like things were getting heated between you and Rampage Jackson after his fight against Keith Jardine. Is there anything about Rampage that bothers you on a personal level?
I would love to fight Rampage, it would be dessert after the Machida fight. I like him on a personal level, I think he’s a great guy, funny and everything — but I really just wanna whoop his ass.
The Light Heavyweight championship has changed hands in two title fights in a row. How important is it to defend the title at this point?
I don’t really think about the title, to be honest with you. I’m just going to go in there and fight. I’m a proud champion, but at the same time I’m not really fighting for the belt. I’m fighting because I love to fight and don’t wanna lose and I don’t like to lose. The belt is there for motivation and it’s motivation for other fighters to come and get me.
What do you think of Shogun Rua? Would you say he became yet another major competitor in 205 pounds?
I always thought he was a major competitor, he just started off slow and didn’t have the proper motivation. Now he’s been properly motivated and healthy and he’s figured things out so he will be a problem for fighters.
