The UFC reports that Heavyweight striker Cheick Kongo will step in for the injured Heath Herring and take on blue-chipper Cain Velasquez at UFC 99. The event is to be held at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13, 2009.
Kongo’s addition the June 13th card is a positive sign for the event, as this bout may serve as a co-headliner. UFC 99 was previously thought of as a weaker-than-average event with Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva as the only proven draws slated to fight.
No longer is that the case with Cheick Kongo on board. Kongo has been training at Wolfslair MMA Academy in the UK with training partners and fellow UFC contenders in Quinton “Rampage” Jackon and Michael “The Count” Bisping. The French-native Kongo comes into this bout winning five out of his last six bouts, with notable wins over Mirko Crocop and Antoni Hardonk. He will be sure to be aggressive in this fight, as a win over Cain Velasquez should put him in line for a Heavyweight title shot against Brock Lesnar.
Velasquez, on the other hand, is no slouch himself. Undefeated in the UFC and boasting All-American wrestling credentials at Arizona State, the AKA product is also looking to increase his stock in hopes for a future championship bout.
