The war of words continues. Ever since Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva made the move to the 185 lbs. division, he and the current kingpin of the middleweight division, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, have traded verbal jabs to a point where it appears thousands of dollars may be up for grabs during the main event at UFC 99.
The latest shot comes courtesy of Wanderlei in an offer to Anderson to “put his money where his mouth is” in the latest issue of Fighters Only Magazine.
“If Anderson believes in Franklin so much, bet $50,000, and let’s see who takes the money.” This of course comes on the heels of the curious decision by Anderson to train Wanderlei’s opponent, and Anderson’s former opponent for that matter, for UFC 99, Rich Franklin.
The main event at UFC 99 between Silva and Franklin will take place at a catch weight of 195 lbs., as both fighters have stated they will continue their careers at different weight classes, Silva at 185, and Franklin at 205. Wanderlei’s decision to drop to the middleweight division is what initially sparked the verbal war between himself and Anderson, when “The Spider” called Wanderlei’s career move “pretentious.”
Many people in the industry believe that a match between the two Silvas may take place in the future. “Everyone wishes to fight the best ones and he is being pointed as the top of the world in all weights, so I want this bout and the knockout,” said Wanderlei on his wish to one-day face Anderson Silva and be the first to put an L on his record in a very long time.
But Wanderlei will likely have to leave the cage victorious at UFC 99 to keep hopes for that fight alive. And Wanderlei has every intention on doing just that.
“I go to knock him out. I have trained so much and Rich won’t last two rounds. I think it is good Anderson has been preparing him. I hope he is also on the corner. I want to dare him to bet $50,000. I put this amount, and Anderson or his sponsors, Ed Soares or Joinha, bet another part. Who wins takes the money,” he noted.
Should Wanderlei Silva defeat Rich Franklin come June 13th, speculation about a fight between “The Axe Murderer” and “The Spider” will undoubtedly continue to grow.
