The UFC middleweight division’s top two contenders will meet at UFC 102 when Nate Marquardt and Damian Maia step into the ring. According to the Brazilian fighter’s official site, this bout is set to happen in Portland, Oregon on August 29. Marquardt versus Maia joins an already loaded card with Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin also headlining along with Randy Couture against Antonio “Minotouro” Nogueira.
Damian Maia comes into this fight with a reputation as arguably the most exciting submission finisher in all of the UFC, having twice taken home submission of the night bonuses. Before his foray into professional MMA, Maia was one of the top grapplers ona the planet, having won the BJJ World Championships, Pan American Games, and at Abu Dhabi. Maia is looking to extend his six-fight win streak in the UFC and his perfect record in MMA. He is coming off a win against Chael Sonnen.
He’ll face his biggest test against Marquardt, who hasn’t been finished via submission since his guillotine loss to fellow UFC fighter Ricardo Almeida. Nate “The Great”, a Greg Jackson trained-fighter, is coming off wins against Wilson Gouveia and Martin Kampmann. A win over Maia would certainly boost his chances of a title rematch against Anderson Silva.
