April 11th will play host to a battle between 2 MMA Juggernauts as Spike TV and the UFC will counter Strikeforce’s debut on Showtime with a replay of UFC 94. UFC president Dana White has said that he has respect for Strikeforce president Scott Coker but it appears business is business with this move.
The head-to-head programming is a first for Strikeforce and the UFC. The UFC has counter programmed Elite XC and the UFC has also battled Affliction Entertainment’s PPV broadcasts.
The UFC countered Elite XC’s debut show on CBS last May with a tribute to one of the most popular MMA fighters on the planet, Chuck LIddell, called “Ultimate Iceman.” The UFC then quickly put together UFC Fight Night 14 to counter the debut of Affliction: “Banned”. The UFC also countered Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” with the replay of UFC 91 “Lesnar vs. Couture”.
UFC 94 features the rematch between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and lightweight champ B.J. Penn as well as Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva, Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones, Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim and Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida.
UFC 94 is more known for “Greasegate,” which was the controversy surrounding the misconduct of GSP’s corner. GSP’s corner is accused of rubbing GSP with some sort of greasing agent during his fight with BJ Penn.
Strikeforce’s April 11th event features an interesting main event between former Strikeforce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock and MMA bad boy Nick Diaz, who will meet at a catch-weight of 179 pounds. Other match-ups on the card include: Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez, Joe Riggs vs. Jake Shields, Scott Smith vs. Benji Radach and Hitomi Akano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos.
