After a disappointing and unfortunate ending to their first meeting at WEC 38 in January, WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner and top contender Donald Cerrone could fight again at a late summer WEC event. The rematch has been sought by fans after their first fight at WEC 38 was stopped due to Varner being unable to continue because of an Illegal knee to the head.
The actual date of the fight depends on Varner, who suffered a handful of injuries in their first bout at WEC 38. Once thought to have a career threatening eye injury, Varner recently passed an eye exam that will clear the way for him to be re-licensed by the California State Athletic Commission.
Cerrone is believed to be the top contender in the lightweight division now that Rich Crunkilton has pulled out of the WEC 39 bout with Bart Palaszewski. While once considered a possible top contender’s bout, the WEC 39 fight now features the lesser known Ricardo Lamas. Palaszewski is also unlikely to earn a title shot with a win over the WEC newcomer.
