According to sources close to the promotion, Nick Diaz was one of the contracts Strikeforce acquired in their recently minted deal with the now defunct ProElite organization.
Sources have also indicated that Diaz’s first fight for the organization will likely come as early as late March or early April.
The popular brawler and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practitioner was supposed to face “Mach” Sakurai this past July, but that fight was nixed by ProElite who instead put Diaz in against an overmatched Thomas Denny.
Diaz is currently riding a three fight win streak and has looked sharp since his disappointing loss to KJ Noons back in November of 2007.
His opponent has yet to be named, but an interesting rumor has placed Frank Shamrock at the top of the list of possible opponents.
While a fight between the two would seem to harbour a bit of a size discrepancy at first glance, Diaz, who has fought at 160 lbs. for the past couple of years is actually two inches taller then the heavier Shamrock, who fights at middleweight (185 lbs). Diaz is said to walk around between 180 to 185 lbs., so moving up to middleweight wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for him.
We’ll have more on this story as it continues to develop.
