UFC President Dana White announced today that Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir could happen this April, likely at UFC 97.
“Mir took little damage in his fight with Nog, and Lesnar wants to fight him soon, so April may be the time and place for that,” White told Fighters Only. “It will be good.”
When the two fighters do meet, it won’t be the first time. Mir defeated Lesnar at UFC 81 last year after weathering a vicious onslaught from the former Division I collegiate wrestling champion and catching him in a submission.
Lesnar contends that a controversial break in the action, issued by referee Steve Mazzagatti, contributed to his loss and has asked that Mazzagatti not be allowed to referee the upcoming match up.
The next time the two meet it will be as champions; Mir holds the interim heavyweight title after defeating MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92 and Lesnar earned the heavyweight championship from Randy Couture, becoming only the second fighter to stop Couture via KO.
UFC 97 is set to take place on Saturday April 18th from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and will also likely feature a middleweight championship fight between Anderson Silva and Thales Leites.
