UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008 Preview

UFC 92 boasts three main event caliber matches in its main card with two title fights in both the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight divisions. There is also another Light Heavyweight match-up that could yield the next #1 contender, so to say there’s a lot at stake tonight would be an understatement.

I would like to take this opportunity to preview tonight’s “Ultimate 2008″ card as I’m sure hundreds of thousands of people will be viewing either at a friends house or at a local bar.

UFC Light Heavyweight Title Fight:
Forrest Griffin (C) vs. Rashad Evans

Both of these fighters are coming off of the biggest victories of their careers, Griffin won the UFC Light Heavyweight title by defeated then champion Quinton Jackson via decision. Evans on the other hand knocked out Chuck Liddell in absolutely devastating fashion and earned himself a spot at fellow TUF champion Griffin.

Those expecting an all out slugfest could be in for a rude awakening as Evans could use his superior wrestling if Griffin’s size and reach pose problems at some point in the fight. Remember that this is a five round title fight and neither fighter has had a history of gassing out so this could be an absolute war.

UFC Heavyweight Title Fight:
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (C) vs. Frank Mir

If you wanted to put together a list of the top Heavyweights of all time, nobody would argue about Nogueira being on the list. Mir on the other hand is a completely different story as a motorcycle accident may have taken a few years off of his career but that still doesn’t diminish the fact that he’s a former UFC champion.

Nogueira may be the best Heavyweight of all-time not named Fedor. He has beaten just about everybody but Fedor but that’s nothing to be ashamed about. Mir spent the past 2 years trying to put himself back together after a horrible accident that almost cost him his career.

These guys are top-tier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners who both feel that their games are better than the other. Don’t expect too much stand-up boxing in this fight as both will likely use positioning to get the other on the ground.

Light Heavyweight Fight:
Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson

Talk about two guys who absolutely hate each other. Silva owns two victories over the former UFC champion but Jackson is a completely different fighter then the first two times these guys met.

Silva is coming off of the biggest win in his UFC career while Jackson is still reeling from his shocking decision loss to Griffin. There’s no secret about how this fight is going to go down, both guys are going to punch, kick, slam and knee there way to victory. The only question is who’s going to end up with their hand raised.

All of that and there’s still 7 other fights on tonight’s card. If you aren’t excited about this card, you’re not an MMA fan.
