Jake Shields is one of the best welterweight fighters in the world. At 22-4-1 overall and currently riding an 11-fight win streak, he has fought and defeated the likes of Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Mike Pyle, Nick Thompson and Paul Daley.
Shields, who is currently under contract with the recently sold ProElite organization, now states that he’s ready to take on the best welterweights in the world and to do so he needs to fight in the UFC.
“I feel like it’s been the top show for a while and I feel like most of the competition at my weight is in the UFC,” Shields recently told MMAWeekly.com. “The guys I need to fight, like GSP, B.J. Penn, Jon Fitch, Diego Sanchez.”
Shields made it clear however, that he would not be amiable to toiling on undercards while working his way up to big UFC fights. He wants to step in immediately against the best.
“I’d probably just stay on CBS than go fight on an undercard,” said Shields. “That would make no sense for me at this point. I would hope to step right up against a top fight. I’d love to fight somebody like Diego or Koscheck or one of their top guys for my first fight to show that I belong there. I’m not saying I’m going to run through the guys, but I think I can beat them. I think there are going to be some really tough fights, but I see myself beating anyone out there right now.”
Shields told our friends over atMMAWeekly that his stated goal is to have a UFC title shot by the end of 2009. Shields has repeatedly called out Georges St. Pierre and hasn’t lost sight of his desire to test himself against the UFC welterweight champion.
“I wouldn’t want the fights if I didn’t think I could win them,” said Shields.
