When Paulo Filho failed to make weight in his re-match against Chael Sonnen at WEC 36, he promised that if he lost the three round fight to Sonnen that he would walk across the cage and personally hand him the belt. The fight was a non-title affair due to Filho’s inability to make 185-lbs. Filho never gave Sonnen the belt but Sonnen did take a win and 25% of Filho’s earnings for the fight.
Although the WEC Middleweight division is now officially the UFC’s Middleweight division, Josh Gross of SI.com is reporting that Filho will make good on his promise and ship his belt to Sonnen.
Sonnen was originally scheduled to have his re-match back in March, but Filho was forced to pull out due to depression. After Filho’s lack of willingness to fight last Wednesday, it’s clear that Filho still hasn’t gotten past that as of yet.
Filho’s fate is currently unknown as many feel that Zuffa may not even bring him into the UFC because of his lackluster performance as well as his inability to make weight in a championship bout.
