It’s being reported that a fight between “Smokin” Joey Villasenor and “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler may be in the works for EliteXC’s Nov. 8th card which will be airing live on Showtime.
“Joe [Villasenor] will definitely be appearing sometime in the fall,” said EliteXC VP Jared Shaw. “And he’s definitely in line for a world title shot.”
Lawler had stated that he would be taking the rest of the year off after his second win in as many attempts against Scott Smith back in July. It now appears he’ll be back in the cage before Thanksgiving.
Villasenor’s last bout was a quick TKO of Phil Baroni on May 31st when MMA made its primetime debut on network television with EliteXC’s “Saturday Night Fights”. Also on the card that night was the controversial Lawler/Smith bout which led to an immediate rematch. Villasenor trains out of Greg Jackson’s camp and has won four of his last five bouts. Between 2001 and 2006, Villasenor won 20 straight fights, most of which by T/KO.
Lawler and Villasenor have met before. At a PRIDE fighting event in 2006, Lawler scored a 22-second victory over “Smokin” Joe when he connected on a picture-perfect flying knee early in the fight.
