The UFC traditionally attempts to make their New Years Eve card the best of the year. This year looks to be no different. In addition to the heavyweight title fight between Antonio Nogueira and Frank Mir the UFC is looking to add a fight between lightweight champion BJ Penn and welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. The only problem is that Pierre has fought four times in the past 13 months and may need a break. Pierre himself expressed a few days ago, that he may not fight again until next year at the earliest.
So, if the UFC can’t convince St. Pierre to take the fight against Penn on December 27, then they may look elsewhere for more star power. One possibility advanced by NBCSports is a showdown between Chuck Liddell and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Both men are fighting soon, Liddell in September and Silva in late October, but both have expressed a willingness to fight on shorter notice and Silva has specifically asked to fight more often. The fight would obviously depend on both men retaining victories in their respective fights and coming through virtually unscathed in terms of injuries.
Another match up mentioned by NBCSports is a potential showdown between Forrest Griffin and Wanderlei Silva. Silva, however, has been heavily rumored to be facing Rampage Jackson in his next fight so this match up is still up the air.
