Impatient Kenny Florian Won’t Wait For Penn

MMAWeekly Radio recently talked with Kenny Florian about his plans for the future now that he has extinguished the shooting star that is Roger Huerta. Florian is considered one of the best fighters at 155lbs and although Dana White didn’t guarantee the winner of the bout a shot at B.J. Penn’s lightweight title, it’s easy to make an arguement for Florian. Instead of defending his title at 155lb., it appears as though Penn will move up to welterweight to fight Georges St. Pierre in an epic rematch that saw Penn lose a narrow split decision at their first meeting in March of 2006.

Here’s what Florian had to say about his plans for the remainder of the year and the GSP/Penn fight:

“(Penn) made the decision that he wants to fight GSP and I tell you what, as a fan I want to see that fight.” said Florian.

“I think it’s going to be an unbelievable fight, I think it’s great for the sport. Two guys at the top of their games, two champions in the UFC are going to fight which is huge. I don’t want to wait around either, it’s kind of frustrating at the same time. I do want to fight the top guys, B.J. obviously is a legend and when you want to make your mark, that’s what I want to do, I want to have my legacy in this sport as well, so give me a chance. At the same time, it’s a risky move and some people have criticized me for it, but I still want to get another fight in. I want to fight again before the year’s end and I want to fight someone tough.”

On a possible opponent before the year’s end:

“Maybe I could fight the winner of Griffin-Sherk, I don’t know how the timing works out for that,” quipped Florian. “Maybe we can bring someone in like a (Joachim) Hansen or (Shinya) Aoki or someone, to have kind of a super fight. I don’t care, I want to fight top guys, I want to stay busy and all I’ve got to do is keep winning. There’s still some fights out there for me. It’s not like I’ve cleaned out the division completely. There’s plenty of challenges out there at 155 for me.”

It’s hard not to respect a guy with that kind of drive and determination.

Aside from his career in MMA competition, Kenny and brother Keith will soon be opening their own training facility in the Boston area. You can visit their website at
