SI.com recently caught up with the camp of WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and asked when he’ll be ready to return to MMA, and who is likely to be his opponent. According to a representative of the Russian powerhouse, Fedor will meet a “judo legend or sumo wrestler” in what sounds like a carnival-style fight a la his bout with the freakishly large Hong Man Choi at Yarrenoka New Years 2007 in Japan. Fedor had this to say about his return, and his fight with the winner of Arlovski/Barnett:
“I think definitely by New Year’s Eve I’ll be ready to go,” the 31-year-old Russian told SI.com Sunday.
“My desire at this point is to meet with the winner of the fight,” said Emelianenko, the only current WAMMA champ. “But I still have a desire to fight with whomever loses as well.”
It is a tradition of Emelianenko’s to fight on New Year’s Eve, he has done so the last five years. Mirko Cro Cop was shortly rumored to be fighting Fedor in a rematch of their lopsided bout from three years ago; however that rumor has since been squashed.
The fight everyone wanted to see was a match pitting Fedor against Andrei Arlovski, but Fedor’s hand injury prohibited that bout from taking place at Affliction’s sophomore effort on October 11th. Instead Arlovski will be facing another winner from Affliction: Banned, Josh Barnett.
