A bout pitting Xtreme Couture’s Tyson Griffin against former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk has been agreed upon by the fighters, and is awaiting confirmation and signing. The match will take place in Chicago at UFC 90.
Sherk, who recently lost to B.J. Penn, will be looking to defeat the younger Griffin and cement his place at the top of 155lbs. After his fight with Penn, many criticized the “Muscle Shark” of having a bad game plan when he chose to stand with B.J. rather than take him down. The three round affair was basically a boxing match that ended when Sherk absorbed a devastating flying knee and some punches. The bell rang signifying the end of round three, but the bout was stopped when referee Steve Mazzagatti could see that Sherk was clearly incoherent.
Griffin, who recently won a very convincing unanimous decision over Marcus Aurelio would certainly be propelled to the top of the heap at 155lbs. with a win over the former champ Sherk. Although Griffin is a world-class wrestler and known for his suppressive ground game, he showed the MMA world that he can bang with the best of them as well in his fight with Aurelio. His punches were thrown crisply, accurately, and powerfully.
The fight card for UFC 90 is shaping up quite nicely with Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote headlining, and Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez also battling on the main card.
