Illinois Governor Rod Blahojevich signed legislation to put MMA under the auspices of the athletic commission effective on June 1st of 2008, making a UFC event in Chicago early next year a very likely possibility. UFC is working on getting the date of the regulation moved to January 1st.
Illinois had banned MMA events in 2000, however there have been many MMA events held there due to an exemption status in a 2004 law. UFC would not hold an event in Illinios unless it was put under the auspices of the athletic commission.
The next states that UFC is looking to get fully regulated in are South Carolina and Tennessee. Dave Meltzer is reporting that the big goal would be to get regulated in New York and hold events at Madison Square Garden.
