Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua is the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion, and winner of the PRIDE Fighting Championships' 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix. He is the younger brother of fellow MMA fighter Murilo "Ninja" Rua.

He received a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Nino Schembri. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he also trains in wrestling, Muay Thai and boxing.

Rua received his first title shot in the UFC at UFC 104, where he lost a controversial unanimous decision to UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Most notable MMA personalities felt that Shogun had won the fight, including UFC President Dana White. Due to the controversy surrounding the decision, a rematch took place at UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 on May 8, 2010, a match which Rua won by knocking out the previously undefeated Machida in the first round.
