Shane Carwin is a top contender in the UFC's heavyweight division, where he was previously the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion.
Carwin is an accomplished collegiate wrestler, becoming a two-time NCAA Division II Wrestling National Runner-Up Heavyweight in 1996–97 and the NCAA II Wrestling Heavyweight National Champion in 1999. He was also a two-time All-American in football for Western State.
Carwin works as an engineer while pursuing his MMA career and is also a volunteer wrestling coach for the University of Northern Colorado.
Carwin won the UFC interim heavyweight champion by defeating Frank Mir at UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy on March 27, 2010, keeping his streak of first round finishes in tact. He went on to face UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin on July 3, 2010. After delivering a brutal beating in the first round, Carwin was submitted by Lesnar in the second round, the first loss of his career.
