Jake Shields is generally considered among the top five welterweights on the planet and is the top contender for the UFC welterweight championship. Shields holds the distinction of being EliteXC’s only welterweight champion and is also a former Shooto World Champion and Strikeforce middleweight champion.
Shields has appeared on an episode of Bully Beatdown on MTV, hosted by his Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers opponent Jason Miller. He is a a co-producer for the MMA documentary Fight Life, and also appears on season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter as a grappling coach for Chuck Liddell.
Shields currently trains with Cesar Gracie with Dave Terrell, Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez. He hasn’t lost a bout since dropping a decision to Akira Kikuchi in December of 2004. In July 2010, Shields signed a deal with the UFC and signed with the organization despite never losing the Strikeforce middleweight championship. Shields was stripped of the title, and made his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 on October 23, 2010. Shields defeated Kampmann via split decision.
