Fedor Emelianenko was all prepared to make his Bellator MMA debut Saturday night at Bellator 172.
Then Matt Mitrione was pulled from the main event.
Bellator officials announced late Saturday afternoon that Mitrione was unfit to compete, scrapping plans for the heavyweight contest. The event went on with Josh Thomson and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire meeting in the main event from the SAP Center in San Jose.
Following Anatoly Tokov’s win over Francisco France, “The Last Emperor” entered the cage and offered up a statement.
“I’m very sorry I don’t have the opportunity to perform,” Emelianenko said. “We were preparing for this (fight) very hard.”
It is being reported that the Emelianenko-Mitrione fight will be re-booked for later this year.
Both Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz offered to step in on hours notice and fight Emelianenko.
