Eddie Alvarez Downs Anthony Pettis, Wants Title Shot Next

ufc fight night 81

On the heels of split decision victories over Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez, Eddie Alvarez feels he is ready to contend for UFC gold.

The former Bellator champion scored his second straight win by scoring six takedowns on Pettis in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 81. Last June, Alvarez (27-4) downed Melendez.

“I want the champion next,” Alvarez said. “Give me the champion.”

Rafael dos Anjos, the current titleholder, is set to defend his belt vs. Conor McGregor later this year.

On this night, Alvarez did his best dos Anjos impersonation, using wrestling to negate the “Showtime” skills of Pettis.

“I had a game plan and I stuck to it,” he said. “He is a former champion. So far, I have fought nothing but guys with title fights.”

Pettis, who won 18 of his first 20 pro fights, is now on a two-fight losing skid.
