Drew Dober’s first UFC victory will be one he treasures for a long time, as he defeated former WEC champion Jamie Varner Saturday night at UFC on FOX 13.
Varner was competing in his home state of Arizona, but a decision to try a lateral drop ultimately spelled the end for him.
Dober capitalized, locking up a submission for his first UFC victory in three tries, and his first win since 2013.
“I was lucky to fight one of my idols,” said Dober after Varner announced his retirement. “It was a pleasure (fighting him). I started when I was 17, looking up to Jamie.”
Dober had lost to Sean Spencer and Nick Hein via decision over his first two UFC bouts. Before that, he had won five in a row, including three submission wins.
