Donald Cerrone Knows What He’s Getting Into Vs. Benson Henderson

ufc fight night 59

Not many fighters would step up on two weeks notice and fight somebody the caliber of Benson Henderson.

But Donald Cerrone isn’t like most fighters.

Fresh off a decision victory over Myles Jury, “Cowboy” agreed to replace Eddie Alvarez and take on the former UFC and WEC champion on January 18 at UFC Fight Night 59. During their WEC tenure, Henderson defeated Cerrone twice.

“Dude held the title,” Cerrone said, during a special media teleconference recently (thanks to for the quotes). “He’s one of the best out there. That’s for goddamn sure.

“It’s not like I’m taking a filler-fight against some bottom-25 guy. This is one of the top guys and I know that going into it. I’m super excited.”

Cerrone (26-6) has won six in a row since a decision loss last August to current No. 1 contender Rafael dos Anjos. However, his last two bouts have gone the distance, something out of the norm for the fighter.

Now, he’ll get his chance at moving even closer to a potential title shot vs. Henderson, who lost to dos Anjos his last time out, as well.

“If you want to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best,” he said. “The only problem is if I goddamn get that belt, who’s going to be left to fight? That’s what I want to know.”
