There is a level of respect between Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz, but when it comes right down to it, the bantamweights just do not like one another.
Faber expressed his excitement for the return of “The Dominator” Saturday night at UFC 178, welcoming him back on Twitter. However, that quickly turned into more of the typical trash talk after Cruz fired off the first shot after his win.
Cruz, fighting for the first time in almost three years, said he planned to continue beating Team Alpha Male fighters after disposing of Takeya Mizugaki. Faber responded on Twitter to those remarks.
“Negativity continues 2 boil over 4 Dom,” Faber wrote. “Guys itching 4a whoopn, if T.J. Dillashaw gets 1st whack DC will only have losses 2 one team (Alpha Male).”
When he appeared on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show, the former UFC and WEC bantamweight champion was asked about what “The California Kid had to say.
“I think Faber needs to keep coaching, trying to do his thing,” Cruz said. “Because obviously he didn’t listen to Dillashaw’s coach, and he hasn’t gotten any better. The record I know Faber has is the most consecutive (UFC) title tries and losses. What are you talking about Faber? Settle down.”
While we could still possibly get Faber-Cruz 3 in the future, UFC president Dana White confirmed after the event that Cruz would indeed face Dillashaw for the title next. While there is “hate’ between Faber and Cruz, that is not the same for Dillashaw.
“It’s nothing towards T.J.,” he said. “He’s been nothing but respectful. I don’t hate the team. Faber is the only guy I have a problem with. I like the rest of them.
“T.J. has grown and gotten better. Yeah, he’s got the title, so why wouldn’t you want to fight for the title.”
