Demian Maia was once the middleweight No. 1 contender. An easy title defeat and several more caused Maia to reexamine his career path. He made the drop to welterweight and has won all three of his appearances.
“I’ve felt better every time out at 170,” said Maia to Bleacher Report. “With each fight I’m getting more used to this new weight and I feel this it is the best weight for me to perform at. Every time I feel better.”
He was able to make quick work of Dong Hyun Kim and Rick Story, then took a decision win over Jon Fitch this year. He returns against Jake Shields.
Shields took a win in June after sitting out for a short period due to a post-fight drug test being not so clean. The exact substance was never disclosed.
They close UFC Fight Night 29 on October 9. It’s from Brazil’s Ginásio José Correa.
