This Day In History: The Epic Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale

the ultimate fighter

Ten years ago today the UFC finally found its calling card.

Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar, who had a combined record of 18-3 at the time, entered into the Octagon and left as two of the top faces in the promotion for years to come.

Griffin earned a decision win and the title of Ultimate Fighter, but the 15-minute battle both men put their bodies through was more than any W or L on the record.

While he would go on to later win the UFC light heavyweight title, Griffin is still remembered for his fight with Bonnar that UFC president Dana White credits with becoming the driving force for the UFC to reach where it is at today.

TUF continued for several years on Spike TV after, before shifting over to FOX Sports 1. Seasons of the show based in other countries have come to fruition, while the sport has grown leaps and bounds.

Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell were the head coaches, while singer Willa Ford was also part of the series.

That April 9 card also featured Diego Sanchez stopping Kenny Florian in the middleweight finals of TUF, while Rich Franklin earned a second round TKO over Ken Shamrock in the main event.

TUF 1 featured Griffin, Bonnar, Sanchez, Florian, Josh Koscheck, Nate Quarry, Chris Leben, Mike Swick, Bobby Southworth, Sam Hoger, Alex Schoenauer, Lodune Sincaid, Jason Thacker, Josh Rafferty, Alex Karalexis and Chris Sanford.
