Daniel Cormier, Kenny Florian Offer UFC Fight Night 57 Thoughts

“UFC Tonight” hosts Daniel Cormier and Kenny Florian offered up their thoughts concerning tonight’s UFC Fight Night 57 main event between featherweights Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson earlier this week.

The card airs on FOX Sports 1 from the University of Texas’ Frank Erwin Center.

For Swanson, the bout is of the utmost importance, as a title fight vs. Jose Aldo hangs in the balance. He has won six straight, including finishes of Dennis Siver, Charles Oliveira, Ross Pearson and George Roop.

“He has to dominate the ring,” Cormier said. “If he allows Frankie to fight at his pace, he will have a problem. He believes he’ll have the speed advantage, but Edgar is very fast. Cub also has to defend takedowns he has has to punch him. Frankie punches at a great pace. Frankie is more active than the other guys he fights.

“Cub has to use his reach. He has to keep it standing and keep Frankie from taking him down. He has to look for the finish and make a statement for the title shot.”

Florian, a former title contender, believes Edgar can use Swanson’s biggest assets against him. “The Answer” has scored back-to-back wins since a 2013 loss to Aldo for the belt.

“I believe Cub has the speed to stand with him, but sometimes Cub gets too aggressive,” Florian said. “And that opens him up to takedowns. With Frankie’s wrestling, he can’t do that. Edgar’s keys are he has to push the pace, utilize the angles and land the takedown.”
