Daniel Cormier Didn’t Win UFC Title Fight, Regardless Of Drug Results

Daniel Cormier isn’t going to take anything away from Jon Jones despite the revelation that he failed a drug test weeks out from their recent UFC title fight.

Cormier, appearing on a recent episode of “UFC Tonight,” discussed the loss. Jones, the reigning light heavyweight champion, has since entered into a drug rehab facility for cocaine use.

A test given to him in early December came back positive, but “DC” still knows he lost the fight inside the Octagon.

“The fight is what it is,” Cormier said. “He won the fight. I don’t believe I won the fight.

“But how unfortunate. This is a guy who has the ability to reach people at a different level; not many people can reach outside of the sport and world of MMA but I believe Jon can do that. Unfortunately, these incidents keep happening on him after his unbelievable performances.

“He should be a star among stars. He should go in the ESPYs and be recognized with the biggest stars in the sports world. But because he does things outside the Octagon, it holds him back.”

The sting of failing to secure UFC gold continues to fuel Cormier, who suffered his first pro MMA loss in the process. The ex-Olympic wrestler was taken down for the first time in his career vs. Jones, who won a national title at the junior college level.

“It’s been tough,” he said. “It was a tough fight. You owe it to yourself to let it burn a little bit and let it hurt. If you try to move forward too fast, it doesn’t have the effect that you hope it has to allow yourself to rebuild afterward.”
