The second time was the charm for Daniel Cormier, as he submitted Anthony Johnson Saturday night at UFC 187 and became the new light heavyweight champion.
It wasn’t easy for Cormier, as he took several big-time punches and kicks from “Rumble.” But his endurance and cardio paid off, as the former Olympian took Johnson down and worked in a rear-naked choke in the third round.
After Johnson put the belt around Cormier’s waist, he delivered a simple message to the former champion, Jon Jones.
“Jon Jones, get your shit together. I’m waiting for you,” Cormier screamed before storming out of the Octagon.
Earlier this year, Jones successfully defended his title with a decision win over Cormier, handing him his first career loss.
The UFC made the move to strip Jones of his belt after his incident in New Mexico involving a car crash. “Bones” was also suspended and no timetable has been set for his return.
Cormier was able to score on just two takedowns of the nine he attempted, but once he did, he imposed his will. The new champion landed 69 of 86 strikes, many of which came while inside the guard.
