Chael Sonnen is known for getting title shots and running his mouth. Usually in good fun, Sonnen has been known to go a little too far. According to UFC president Dana White, that happened during FOX Sports Live when Sonnen joked about the 2009 assault of singer Rihanna from then boyfriend Chris Brown.
The segment saw Sonnen reacting to boxing champion Floyd Mayweather’s easy win over Saúl Álvarez.
“I’ve never seen anybody in the history of America get so rich and so famous off of having complete wimps throwing punch at their face,” said Sonnen. “I know what you’re saying. You’re saying, ‘Well, it’s happened before, what about Rihanna?’ Shame on you. Classless. I will not stand for it. Too soon? Was it too soon?”
For White, it was too soon and he’s warning Sonnen to get his priorities in order.
“You can’t make fun of domestic violence or any other thin,” said White. “He’s a sports commentator and he’s got to knock that s— off. He’s got to stop. He’s got to stop or it’s not going to be good. Chael needs to stop the comedy and do what he’s on that show to do. He’s great at it. He’s super talented. Leave the jokes to the comedians.”
Sonnen has apologized and meets Rashad Evans at UFC 167 out of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. It’s November 16 and serves as the 20th anniversary show for the UFC.
