The management team for Vitor Belfort declined an interim UFC middleweight title fight vs. Lyoto Machida for next month, UFC president Dana White confirmed following UFC 183.
White was asked about the possible fight during the post-fight show. Chris Weidman was expected to defend his title vs. Belfort, but the reigning champion suffered an injury in training that will keep him out.
“I picked up the phone and I called Lyoto Machida,” White said. “I said, ‘Here’s the deal.’ The first thing Lyoto said is, ‘Send me the bout agreement.’
“I called (Belfort’s team) and they’re like, ‘We’ll wait for Chris Weidman.’ So, there you go.
UFC 184 is now set to be headlined by Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano for the UFC female bantamweight title. White did say Belfort could remain on the card if an opponent is found.
