Former Strikeforce champion, and a current Invicta FC titleholder, Cris “Cyborg” Justino has started the work to get down to 135 pounds and make bantamweight for the first time in her career.
While Cyborg isn’t stating it is a move 100-percent directed towards a possible future meeting with UFC champion Ronda Rousey, it’s hard to argue. And she admits that, too.
“I think (the move is) because of having more girls in 135 than 145,” said Cyborg, during a recent appearance on Submission Radio. “If it’s possible that I make 135 and I’m still good and still healthy, I think I can keep (fighting at) 135. I’ll be happy because I can fight more times per year.
“If I make 135, I want to fight Ronda Rousey for sure.”
Despite never crossing paths, Cyborg (12-1) and Rousey have dominated headlines when it comes to female MMA for years. Justino won the Strikeforce title in 2009 by defeating Gina Carano, defending it twice before failing a post-fight drug test.
Rousey is the only women to wear UFC gold, having also been the Strikeforce champion. A former Olympic medalist, Cyborg has respect for Rousey, but not fear.
