It’s a sad day in MMA, as bantamweight Cornelius Godfrey was killed in a motorcycle accident.
NBC4i reports Godfrey died overnight when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail in Columbus, OH. When his wife hadn’t heard from the 25-year-old for hours, she tracked his whereabouts via his cellphone. It led her to an intersection of the crash site where motorcycle parts were scattered. A police helicopter shortly spotted Godfrey and his motorcycle.
Police said Godfrey was heading home from a bar one mile away from the crash scene.
Godfrey turned pro in 2011 and took six straight stoppages for a chance to compete in the XFC. He didn’t win in his lone XFC appearance and returned to the Indy scene this year. He took a pair of decision wins out of Spartan FC and UVC to go 8-1.
XFC President John Prisco wrote on Facebook that tomorrow’s show will be in honor of Godfrey.
