Cody Garbrandt Views Thomas Almeida Contest As Possible “Gatti-Ward Trilogy”

ufc fight night 88

Cody Garbrandt has reeled off eight pro wins in his eight-fight career, with the last three coming inside the Octagon.

At UFC Fight Night 88 this May, Garbrandt (8-0) will headline the event alongside opponent Thomas Almeida in a key bantamweight battle.

The 24-year-old Team Alpha Male fighter is fully aware of the importance, as he discussed with “UFC Tonight” earlier this week.

“He’s undefeated, I’m undefeated. He has knockout finishes and so do I,” he said. “I had a vision quest and I wanted to fight John Lineker and asked Sean Shelby for Lineker, Almeida, then a title shot. It’s a race to the title. We’re both young in our careers. If I knock him out, he can rematch me for title and we could have a trilogy in the future like Gatti and Ward.”

Garbrandt, who owns wins over Augusto Mendes, Henry Briones and Marcus Brimage since signing with the UFC, has finished seven of his eight opponents. Almeida (21-0) sports 20 career knockouts and submissions, and is 4-0 inside the Octagon.

“I’m the better martial artist. I’m more well rounded in wrestling, grappling and striking. I hit harder than him. I’m faster. I create angles. He’s more linear. My pace and pressure, speed and power will be better,” he said. “If he was super confident, he’d say he’ll finish me in one round. His chin’s not going to hold up. I hit way harder than anybody that he’s faced. He won’t handle the forward pressure. When I find that chin of his, he’s definitely going to sleep.”
