Cody Garbrandt told anyone that would listen that he has the power to defeat everyone in the bantamweight division.
Despite all that, and with a perfect record on his resume, Garbrandt was viewed as a heavy underdog against Thomas Almeida in their main event fight Sunday at UFC Fight Night 88.
Following just two-plus minutes of action, it was Garbrandt standing tall over the previously unbeaten Almeida, earning a ninth win and eighth stoppage.
“Can I get some respect now?” Garbrandt asked. “I wasn’t even ranked in the Top-15. Can I get some respect now?
The Team Alpha Male-trained Garbrandt (9-0) is now 4-0 with the UFC and has finished three of the four – including two straight inside of the first round.
“I’m the hardest hitter in the division,” he said. “Dominick Cruz, (whoever), it doesn’t matter. I’m coming for the belt.”
Almeida (21-1) suffered his first loss in his career.
Garbrandt did say he believes Almeida is a “future champion” and that the two will have “future fights” against one another.
