Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has made it perfectly clear that he would have topped Jon Jones in his prime. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t embrace what he sees from the current 205-pound king.
Jones will defend his title against Glover Teixeira this evening at UFC 172. Teixeira is a close friend and frequent training partner of “The Iceman’s,” and the two have known each other for quite some time.
“The belt is something he’s been dreaming about forever,” Liddell said. “This is a huge moment for him.”
In terms of what he wants to do, Teixeira will be imploring more of an old-school UFC style, says Liddell.
“Glover is a brawler. He comes after you, throws heavy punches and has great jiu-jitsu,” he said. “I think Glover is a bad match up for Jones.”
Liddell believes that “Bones” needs to push the fight to the latter stages and “get (Teixeira) tired.”
“Jon is an excellent fighter,” the UFC Hall of Famer added. “He uses his distance and is unorthodox. He comes out of nowhere and always has a great game play. Let’s see if he can stick to it.”
