Charles Oliveira went down in a heap Sunday night after a minute of action vs. Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night 74.
It took medical professionals and several minutes of attention before Oliveira was removed from the Octagon and taken to the hospital for further examination.
“I injured my neck in training, but did physical therapy and thought everything was fine,” Oliveira told MMAFighting.com, “but when I fell against the cage, everything went numb. I couldn’t feel my body.”
The loss snapped a four-fight win streak for Oliveira, who remained in the hospital over-night for more tests.
“I trained really hard for this fight,” he said. “I would like a rematch because there was no fight. I got injured literally the first time I attacked.”
According to a report by MMAjunkie.com, Oliveira suffered a micro-tear of his esophagus in the fight. The injury was confirmed by a UFC official and Dr. Jeff Davidson, a UFC medical consultant who was working the event.
