Chael Sonnen knows what it’s like to be in fights that go down in history.
Sonnen, who pushed Anderson Silva to the limits several years ago for the UFC middleweight title, was impressed with the performances put on Saturday at UFC 165 by UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.
Jones successfully defended his title for a sixth time, earning a decision victory over “The Mauler.”
“This was the greatest fight in the light heavyweight division ever,” said Sonnen, during the post-fight show. “The story of this fight was the head kicks and the elbows of Jon Jones. But he was challenged.”
Sonnen pointed out that Gustafsson was able to deny Jones on several takedown attempts, and even brought the champion down.
“You need fights like this for your legacy,” Sonnen added. “You find out, does he have the guts? Jon cam back after losing the first round and proved he was the best.”
Dominick Cruz, also on the post-fight show analyst team, stated that “Both these guys showed a lot of heart. I think they should fight again.”
