Maia will have the home-Octagon advantage, as the event takes place from Brazil. Shields, however, is a former champion.
Both fighters have competed for the UFC title, and a win vs. the other could lead to another chance at the belt in the immediate future.
“These guys are mirror images of each other,” Sonnen said, “right on down to the heart and determination. Both of these guys have an iron will to win.
“Generally, when all things are equal, that’s what you turn to. Who wants it more, and who is in better shape.”
