It wasn’t as impressive as his previous four finishes, but Chad Mendes gutted his way to a decision victory over Nik Lentz Saturday night at UFC on FOX 9.
Many questioned if there was something wrong with Mendes during the 15-minute fight, including cageside announcer Joe Rogan.
Following the announcement of the decision, UFC president Dana White remarked on Twitter that Mendes “told Joe Silva he’s got the flu/cold and felt like (expletive) tonight.”
Despite battling an illness, Mendes still scored on eight takedowns, using his excellent wrestling to keep Lentz at bay.
Prior to the Lentz fight, Mendes (16-1) had finished Clay Guida, Darren Elkins, Yaotzin Meza and Cody McKenzie since a loss to UFC champion Jose Aldo in 2012. All but the Guida win came in the first round – and under two minutes.
He just told Joe Silva he's got the flu\cold and felt like shit tonight.
