When Fabricio Werdum fought Fedor Emelianenko on June 26th of last year it was seen as an insurmountable task. He proceeded to shock the MMA world by submitting the feared Russian just 69 seconds into the fight.
On February 12th in the first round of Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix Werdum will face a similar task. Alistair Overeem at this point in his career is considered by many to be Fedor 2.0. A terminator like figure in the sport that has created tremendous hype with casual and hardcore fans alike.
Is the hype warranted? I personally am somewhat of a non-believer in The REEM as I wrote earlier this month. We know Overeem can crush decent MMA heavyweights, but can he do the same to top-level heavyweights like Werdum or Emelienenko? I really don’t know and this why this tournament is so intriguing.
There are so many unknowns. Would you be shocked if Werdum beat Overeem? I don’t think I would. What do you think?
