The emotion being shown by Cain Velasquez is something many have not see out of his inner circle.
However, Fabricio Werdum has managed to get that side of Velasquez out ahead of their unification match for the heavyweight title tonight at UFC 188.
During a recent interview on “UFC Tonight,” Velasquez explained why Werdum’s interim title is nothing more than a paper belt at the moment.
“He’s the interim champ,” he said. “He didn’t get the real belt, obviously. I’m happy to show everyone who the real champ is.”
Velasquez, who hasn’t fought since 2013 due to injuries, owns wins over Junior dos Santos, Brock Lesnar and Antonio Silva in recent fights. While some have complained about the series of injuries suffered by the AKA gym, Velasquez isn’t planning on changing anything he does.
“I’ll keep it the same. It’s working. It’s not just us getting hurt,” he said. “Other fighters are too. We’re fighters. We spar. It takes a toll on the body. I’m 100-percent healthy now. I’m happy with the training camp.”
And about what to expect in terms of the outcome this evening from Mexico, Velasquez said “I never have a prediction. I always say that it’s going to be a five-round war. I’m ready for everything. If it ends early, then I’ve done something right. I expect a long, grueling fight.”
FightLine will have complete coverage of all the action, including live play-by-play, later this evening.
